DG Khan District
DERA GHAZI KHAN was founded in the 15th century by Ghazi Khan, who was a Mirani Tribe Sardar. The old city was situated at a distance of 12-kilo meters towards the east of the present city with a total area of 3,038410 acres comprising 922730 acres of Cultivated Area and 2,065780 acres of Non-Cultivated area. In 1908, heavy floods in river INDUS abolished the old city of D.G. Khan, and then the new city of D.G. Khan came into being in 1910. The City is a masterpiece of town planning, divided into different blocks, has two community places for gathering and different social functions. The British rule established the colonial system in the sub-continent and declared D.G. Khan as a district as back as in the year 1849.
General Court Land was appointed as 1st Deputy Commissioner of the District. Keeping in view the rapidly increasing population of the area and deteriorating law & order situation, the District D.G. Khan was divided into two districts i.e. D.G Khan and Rajan Pur. There is two revenue sub division of the District. A Tribal / Political Area spreads along with the western side of the district. It was a beautiful town and was called Saraiki, DERA LAND OF FLOWERS due to plenty of gardens. Kasturi Canal was dug from the INDUS River.
In the year 1913, the Municipal Committee came into existence. At that time, the area of the town was very small. Physical growth continued and now the area is about 12 km (4 square miles). The major growth of the town has taken place since 1947. The town has largely spread to the north and south and it could not expand to the west due to the danger of flooding torrents. For instance, the town was affected in 1955. Thereafter, in 2010 and 2012, it was found that nature has gifted us with several minerals such as Uranium. The discovery of such minerals led to their use for the defense of our beloved country, Pakistan
D.G. Khan is situated in the CENTER OF PAKISTAN. The development in the town from 1947 to 1958 remained slow due to a lack of transportation and communication facilities. Only a boat bridge on the RIVER INDUS in the winter season and steamer service for the summer season linked D.G. Khan with the rest of Punjab. Later on, Taunsa Barrage has constructed on river INDUS in 1953 and the pace of development gained momentum.
In 1982, the D.G. Khan district was given the status of Division (comprising four districts i.e. D.G. Khan, Rajan Pur, Layyah, and Muzaffargarh). At that time, the City Committee was given the status of Corporation. To boost its development and provide quality education to the students of this area at their doorstep, two Public Sector Universities were established namely Ghazi University and Mir Chakar University of Engineering & Technology.
Besides this, Ghazi Medical College and Airport are functioning to boost its development. Punjab Horticulture Authority, Waste Management Company, Cardiology Hospital, and so many development projects have also been sanctioned.
